KBF first started with a school in the slum areas of Kolkata. In order for children to be accepted into formal government schools, children have to be able to speak, read and write Hindi, Bengali and English, therefore many children do not get accepted into and cannot get a proper education. These children instead work collecting bottles to recycle, or cutting up plastic to make flip flops to sell.
KBF believes that all children have the right to education and in 2008 began a school for these children within the slums. Dedicated and compassionate staff work with the children to improve their literacy, and since starting, a number of children have been accepted and admitted into formal government schools.
These children now have the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty for themselves and pursue new ambitions. These children still come back to the KBF school for help with their homework, for a daily meal and for the friendships they have built up.
If you would like to support a child to go to school then please check out our sponsorship program.
At KBF we also support children with special needs and learning difficulties. Click here to find out more.
